The NFL has imposed a hefty $250,000 fine on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for an action he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture directed at fans during a recent game at MetLife Stadium.
Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones insists he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was regrettable. It was kind of an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the signal was completely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally done. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. However, it got corrected pretty quick.”

This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples include:
